About OOS
Our Mission Statement
Members of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society are dedicated to providing the finest in medical care for patients with musculoskeletal problems. We adhere to the highest ethical standards and practice orthopaedics in the most professional manner possible. Through continuing medical education and self improvement members are always striving to achieve excellence in quality orthopaedic care.
History
At the Ohio State Medical Association meeting held on May 3, 1939, a group of orthopaedic surgeons met to form a permanent organization for the Orthopaedic Surgeons of Ohio. A temporary chairman, Burt G. Chollett of Toledo, was named. Dr. Chollett asked Albert H. Freiberg (Cincinnati), Walter Hoyt (Akron), Harlan Wilson (Columbus), and Clarence Heyman (Cleveland) to join him on a committee, which would iron out the details for the structure of the group.
It is evident from the letters and memos from the first few years of the society that the basic philosophy of the group was developed by orthopaedic surgeons who were concerned that their professional organization be both politically active and technically supportive of its members. They formed the Buckeye Orthopaedic Club to that end and in turn established the integrity and strength of the Society. This two-fold purpose, governmental policy involvement and technical professional advancement, became the focus of the club.
In 1947, the group decided to change its name to the Ohio Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Gerald W. Sutherland designed the seal to represent the professional organization. The circular shape represents unity, with the outline of the State of Ohio. The world famous Orthopaedic Tree rests in the center. The seal represents the goals of orthopaedic medicine and the professionalism of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society.
Today the OOS is one of the most active state Societies in the nation. Membership has grown to over four hundred surgeons and the Annual Meeting attracts 125-150 members each year. The Society monitors all state legislative and regulatory activity. Members testify in the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate on issues of importance to the practice of medicine.
The Ohio Orthopaedic Society has a representative on the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation Health Care Quality Assurance Advisory Committee, the State of Ohio Trauma Board and the Ohio State Medical Association House of Delegates. The OOS also selects members to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Councilors to represent Ohio in Washington, DC on issues affecting the practice of orthopaedics.
For over 80 years orthopaedic surgeons in Ohio have dedicated their time and efforts to advance the practice of orthopaedics and deliver quality healthcare to their patients.
